Orientation on Restorative Justice and Lawyering

On May 26, 2017, Nepal Forum for Restorative Justice organized a half-day workshop on Restorative Justice and Lawyering on at Patan High Court Bar Association, Lalitpur.

The orientation was facilitated by Mr. Ramkanta Tiwari (NFRJ) and Judge Tek Narayan Kunwar, who was also a guest speaker on the topic. The participants in the program were member lawyers from the Patan High Court Bar Association. In the workshop, lawyers were trained on the ways restorative justice can be pursued.

During the program, the participating lawyers were oriented on the importance of having restorative justice in Nepal’s criminal justice system as a way of overcoming the shortcomings of the punitive justice system. It was also highlighted that lawyers in Nepal have a potential of pushing forward a non-adversarial lawyering system as they represent victims and offenders both. If they can plead for a more accountability-sensitive sentencing from the judges in the current judicial-legal framework of Nepal, it surely opens up avenues for restorative justice.
